South Dakota Tallow and Performance Botanicals
Lone Tree Tallow Co. is a South Dakota skincare company built on two things: heritage tallow rendered from prairie-raised cattle, and a performance botanicals line formulated around modern bioactives. One repairs the barrier. The other signals it to rebuild. They are designed to be used together, and this page explains how the whole system fits.

Why South Dakota tallow
Tallow is an agricultural ingredient, and most brands will not tell you where theirs came from. That is a strange thing to accept in a product whose entire premise is that the fat is good for you.
Where cattle graze changes the fat. South Dakota sits on some of the last large expanses of native and restored mixed-grass prairie in North America, and cattle raised here graze a genuinely diverse sward: native grasses, forbs, legumes, deep-rooted plants reaching minerals a monoculture pasture never touches. Diet shows up in fat. That is ruminant nutrition, not marketing.
There is a second reason being from here matters, and it has nothing to do with sourcing. We formulate in a climate that is hostile to skin: single-digit winters with wind that does not stop, sub-twenty percent indoor humidity for months, summers that swing thirty degrees in a day. If a balm is going to fail, it fails here first. That is a different bar than a product developed somewhere temperate.

Why tallow works on skin
Not romance about the prairie. The reason is that tallow's fatty acid profile is unusually close to the lipids human skin already produces: oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid in ratios your barrier recognises. It carries vitamins A, D, E, and K in a form skin can use.
Conventional moisturiser is mostly water, emulsifiers, humectants, and a modest lipid fraction. It addresses the symptom, dryness, by adding water. Tallow addresses the cause: a barrier short on the lipids it is supposed to be making. That gap widens after forty as estrogen declines and sebaceous output drops permanently.
Rendering is where most tallow goes wrong. Too hot, too fast, or held at temperature too long and the fat degrades, picks up a beefy smell that never leaves, and oxidises faster on the shelf. Low and slow, in small batches, is the whole game. If a tallow product smells like a kitchen, that is a rendering problem, not a tallow problem.

Our second line is deliberately tallow-free.
Copper peptides and exosomes are water-soluble and need a water-based, pH-appropriate system to stay stable and available. Tallow is anhydrous. Putting them in the same jar means either compromising the active or building an emulsion that dilutes both. So we did not.

How the two work together: signal, then seal
This is the thread running through everything we make, and it is the single thing most people get backwards.
A signal with no building material is a foreman with an empty yard. Building material with no signal is a pile of lumber. Peptides and exosomes tell skin to rebuild. Tallow supplies what it rebuilds with, and seals the water in while it happens.
The order is not optional. Tallow is occlusive by design. Apply it first and you have put a lid on the skin, and the serum you layer on top largely will not get through it. Serum first, tallow last.

Properly rendered tallow does not. A beefy smell points to rendering that ran too hot or too long.
